The splendor of truth
Office of Faith Formation
“The splendor of truth shines forth in all the works of the Creator and, in a special way, in man, created in the image and likeness of God. Truth enlightens man’s intelligence and shapes his freedom, leading him to know and love the Lord.” – Veritatis Splendor
In every age, God has provided a way for humanity to be drawn into the splendor of Truth. From the very beginning, God himself teaches us. First through creation, covenant relationships, and the historical events that are proclaimed in the Sacred Scriptures every day in the Church’s liturgies. It was this gradual method of teaching that prepared the hearts of many Jews to receive the fullness of Truth revealed in the person of Jesus Christ. Following his Passion, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension, and then filled with the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, Peter and the other apostles began this critical mission given to them by Jesus to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to observe all He had taught them, drawing them into himself who is the way, the truth, and the life. (Mt. 28:19-20, Jn 14:6).
While this mission is of primary importance to the bishops and priests, the magisterium has continually tried to remind us of an important theme that came up repeatedly in the documents of Vatican II: that the whole Church should feel responsible for this mission. That this shared but differentiated responsibility should be taken up with vigor by EVERYONE! Bishops, priests, and religious, of course, but also parents, teachers, and various ministers of the Church. Every person has a unique, vital, and unignorable responsibility for this great work.
It is to support this mission that the diocesan Veritatis Splendor Institute (VSI) exists. To form disciple makers who can go back to their homes and parishes and, together with their pastors, are capable of carrying out the vital work of drawing others into the splendor of Truth. The institute was established to address the needs of everyday followers of Christ eager to have a studied confidence in the splendor of Truth given to us by the pillar and foundation of Truth, Christ’s Church (1 Tim 3:15). This is achieved during monthly gatherings that integrate elements of an advanced adult education class with a rejuvenating retreat. Students are drawn deeper into the Mystery of Faith each month through readings, discussion, the Liturgy of the Hours, and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. They are encouraged in faith by connecting with others from across the diocese in small groups, at lunch, during coffee breaks between sessions, and on a required weekend retreat.
Though this formation involves an investment of time, the benefits are extraordinary. More details about this exceptional opportunity can be found on our website. We encourage you to prayerfully seize this incredible opportunity to dive headlong into the splendor of Truth. The people and place entrusted to you are counting on you to bring the light of His Truth.
