‘A man of deep faith and conviction’
In anticipation of the Installation and Ordination of Bishop-elect Scott Bullock, the West River Catholic asked current parishioners, brother priests, and friends for testimonials to give the members of the Diocese of Rapid City a glimpse of the new bishop. These can be found in the September issue of the WRC which was released September 17.

When I first came to know Bishop-elect Bullock (then Fr. Scott to me), I knew immediately he was a man of deep faith and conviction. His thoughtful and reserved demeanor is united with a deep love of God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. I know him as a priest who reflects the love of the Father by his devotion to Jesus and the Blessed Mother.
I have been privileged to watch as he became more open to the work of the Holy Spirit in his life — work that has borne spiritual fruit in his parish and throughout the Archdiocese of Dubuque. He is inspiring a generation of young priests to know their identity as beloved sons of their heavenly Father and surrender to what He wants to do in and through their lives.
Some other insights that may help you get to know Bishop-elect Bullock: he has a killer sense of humor that sometimes sneaks up on people. He has been known to ‘change the temperature’ of a tense room by dropping a one-liner that has everyone laughing. He is very good at bringing down the barriers to accomplishing what needs to happen. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of literature, as well as movies that he considers “essential viewing.” An avid Iowa State basketball fan, he also enjoys watching a well-played game.
I know Bishop-elect Bullock as both a friend and as a priest who understands that the sure way to live in the Sacred Heart of Jesus is to go through the Immaculate Heart of Mary. He is devoted to her, and it shows. She is always at his side, leading him to her Son and helping him live in obedience to the will of the Father.
