In January 2026, the board for the Western South Dakota Catholic Foundation spent two days at Terra Sancta in reflection, prayer, and planning for the future.

The speaker for the retreat was Mark Conzemius, President Emeritus from the Catholic Community Foundation for Eastern South Dakota. Through discussion, Conzemius guided the board to discern opportunities where they can impact the community the most. They also spent time talking about goals, restructuring committees, and finding ways to get more people involved.

The biggest outcome of the retreat was creating a new mission statement. While setting goals for the future, the board realized the mission needed to clearly reflect who they are. The new mission statement, “Continuing Christ’s mission by promoting faith-filled giving that strengthens the Church in western South Dakota,” was adopted at the February board meeting.

The mission is about continuing Christ’s work in three ways:

• Caring for the Poor — Christ’s ministry was marked by love for those who are vulnerable and marginalized. The foundation creates opportunities to serve those most in need in western South Dakota.
• Promoting the Joy of Giving — giving isn’t just about writing checks. It’s about experiencing the deep joy that comes from generosity and proclaiming the Gospel through our actions. When one gives from the heart, one participates in something sacred and life-giving.
• Building Up the Church — strengthening the body of Christ in western South Dakota, by supporting parishes, ministries, and faith communities doing transformative work across our region. Through this work, the foundation helps to proclaim the Gospel and share the good news of Christ’s love.

The board also welcomed four new members: Deacon Bill White, Porcupine; Joel Johnson, Burke; Pat Guptill, Quinn; and Rick Soulek, Rapid City.
