At Pine Ridge, the Ursuline Franciscan Sisters from Mangalore, India, welcomed another member of their order in December. Her name is Sr. Catherine Neiketounuo Thakro, USF.

She is new to the United States and to the Pine Ridge Reservation. Sr. Catherine hails from Kohima Nagaland, Northeast India. She joined the Ursuline Franciscan Sisters in 2006 and made her first profession of vows in April 2012. She served in Arunachal Pradesh in Pastoral Ministry for two years. She then served as the Vocation Promoter of the Northeast Province and assisted the Candidate Directress for three years. Her perpetual vows were made in April 2018. Prior to coming to Red Cloud, Sr. Catherine served as the Assistant to the Novice Mistress, then a year in Pastoral Ministry and two years as the Vocation Promoter of the Province.

In the September issue of the West River Catholic it explained, “The Ursuline Franciscan Sisters were founded by Fr. Urban Stein a German Jesuit on April 10, 1887. Their charism is: ‘To launch deep into the lives of the people, to find God in all things with the freedom to renounce riches and embrace poverty.’

“The order’s Motherhouse is in Mangalore, India, and there are five provinces in India, and two regions — European Region (Germany and Italy), African Region (Tanzania and Kenya), and a Mission in the United States.”

The religious order arrived here Nov. 2, 2018, and sisters work on the reservation based on an agreement between their province and the Red Cloud schools. At Red Cloud, Sr. Rana Rosalia and Sr. Otoli Sumi teach religion (spiritual formation) for grades K-4 and 5-8. Sister Catherine is working at the Red Cloud Indian School as the executive assistant in the president’s office.
