Knights accomplish free Thanksgiving dinner for 750
The Knights of Columbus Council 1489 with help from Councils 8025 and 8844 held another successful free Thanksgiving dinner in November. According to Cathedral Parish Grand Knight, Ernie Garcia, 750 people were served dinner.
Organizer Fred Berendse had help from 30 knights from three different councils in food preparation and serving. Volunteers included Knight families along with a Boy Scout Troop, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, St. Thomas More High School Students, and some folks who just came to help out.
According to Garcia, “All meals are served restaurant style, not cafeteria style. Since the majority of diners are homeless or low income, we treat them as we are treated when we go out to a restaurant. Someone escorts them to a table where dinners are brought to them.”
A new member of the Cathedral Council, Tony Deblois, a blind, autistic, nationally known recording artist, sang and played a keyboard during dinner.
