Sleep in heavenly peace
Philp Carlson, Brookings, coordinated the “Sleep in Heavenly Peace” project for the Knights of Columbus of South Dakota. Brother Knights from six councils shared in building and delivering 100 twin size beds for children on the Pine Ridge Reservation. In addition, one of the wives and another’s daughter rolled up their sleeves to pitch in. Sr. Barbara Bogenschutz, OP, Oglala, assisted the Knights by taking requests and providing delivery instructions for the beds. (She is pictured with the Knights above.) The children received beds, twin mattresses, pillows, and sheets. Members of the Catholic Daughters provided quilts. The KCs worked June 23-24 delivering the beds. While on the reservation, they also made a pilgrimage to the grave of Servant of God, Nicholas Black Elk.
On June 25, they coordinated efforts with Sacred Heart Parish, Pine Ridge, to climb Black Elk Peak. Climbers took turns scaling the peak to pray for the canonization of Black Elk. Fr. Edmund Yainao, SJ, Pine Ridge, and Fr. DeWayne F. Kayser, from the Diocese of Sioux Falls, (KC chaplain) concelebrated an outdoor Mass.
