First, Dr. Greg and Pam Scherr were selected as the Family of the Year. He joined in 1975 and attained the 4th Degree rank in 1984. Starting in 2011 he began work as the Council Family Director; from 2011 to 2022 he was the fundraising chair for the council’s annual free Thanksgiving Dinner, and during those same years he coordinated the council’s annual campout at Angostura Lake. He was president of the Columbian Club from 2008 to 2019. He was named a Council 1489 Knight of the month in 2009, 2010 and 2011. In 2013 he was named State Knight of the Year.
Second, Fr. Matt Fallgren was awarded the State Blessed Michael McGivney Chaplain of the Year Award. He is the Council 1489 chaplain. In his nomination, the council members pointed out the many Masses he celebrates, his work in preparing parishioners for the sacraments, and the number of baptisms, funerals, confessions, weddings and anointings of the sick he does at cathedral parish. Father Fallgren is responsible for the cathedral’s Health Care Ministry at Monument Health, the Homebound Ministry and some of the health care facilities in Rapid City. At the peak of the COVID-19 he was often the only chaplain at the hospital because visitation was limited. He anointed the sick and brought Communion. He ministered to both Catholics and non-Catholics even in the ICU unit. The nomination also credited his availability to Knights in spiritual and fundraising matters.
