Parishioners at St. Isaac Jogues, Rapid City, celebrated an inculturated Mass in honor of the fall equinox, September 20. Bev Running Bear explained that the fall equinox is not just an arbitrary calendar date, but a profound marker of cosmic balance and an invitation to look inward.

“Rather than a passive seasonal transition, the equinox brings spiritual and physical responsibilities,” she explained to parishioners before Mass. “It marks the beginning of inner reflection and storytelling. There is deep gratitude and prayers offered to honor Unci Maka (Grandmother Earth) for all the plentiful foods, and to persevere through the coming winter months.”

The Mass included the Four Directions prayer, a sage blessing, and the Lakota language was spoken and sung during the prayers of the faithful, the Our Father, and hymns.

Father John Hatcher, SJ, was the celebrant, assisted by Deacon Bill White, Porcupine. Mass was followed by a meal in the Mother Butler Center.
