Where am I going? What is my destiny?”
Father Andrzej Wyrostek
Homily from the Televised Mass, NewsCenter1
Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, July 31, 2022
My dear friends over the last several weeks we have been going through a journey asking ourselves a question through the words spoken by the disciples, by listeners, by the scholar even: What must I do to inherit the eternal Kingdom? What is the most important in our discipleship?
Today’s first reading begins in a very interesting way. “Vanity of vanity, says Qoheleth.” Everything is a vanity meaning everything is meaningless or worthless. But is it? Is something that refers to this world experience or to something more than that?
As you probably notice being from a different country, I speak with an accent and so from time to time I am asked the question where are you from. I’ve been asked that question so many times that when I hear it one more time I’m just like, “again, you should know by now where I’m from!” Then I heard a very interesting comment in a response. It wasn’t in reference to the accent that one speaks with, but it was in reference to a simple question where are you coming from, what’s going on? And the person responded, “the question is not where I’m coming from or what my accent is or where I came from but where am I going? What is my destiny?”
See that’s a beautiful message because if I am from the world only then I would ask a question about the accent and about the values of this world, or the riches, or being poor, what makes us famous, or important what counts on the social media for a moment. What is a disciple of Christ as God’s son and daughter we will ask a question: Where am I going? What is my destiny? And hopefully the answer is eternal life with God.
Its eternal life with God in heavenly home where the heavenly banquet that is prepared for us, which there are foretastes of which we have here at that Mass week after week, we’ll be able to experience in fullness in the presence of the king of eternity. In the presence of the one who is the giver of all treasure. The treasure that one would even be ready and willing to give everything so to possess it only. Pray my friends that you look for the reason to answer the question, what is your destiny? Where are you going? Where is your heart set? What is the treasure that you pay attention to?
