Giving in the Spirit of St. Nicholas

The youth ministry at Blessed Sacrament Church wrapped up a special project channeling the legendary kindness of St. Nicholas to support the homeless in their community. Over 100 students from grades 6 through 12 participated in the “St. Nicholas Bags” initiative, creating more than 250 vinyl string bags packed with essential items. Each bag contained non-perishable food, warm hats, gloves, socks, mittens, and hygiene products. The youth, wearing Santa hats, included messages of hope and encouragement in each bag. Church Response helped to distribute the bags. Supplies were funded by the youth, their families, and parishioners, raising $5,000 to fund the supplies.

The project culminated around the Feast of St. Nicholas on December 6, a day honoring the fourth-century bishop whose legacy of secret gift-giving is continued under the name of Santa Claus. Known for using his inheritance to aid the poor, sick, and suffering, St. Nicholas famously provided dowries for three impoverished sisters to prevent them from being sold into slavery.
