The Naming in Lakota for Fr. Edmund Yainao, SJ

In a display of affection and appreciation for Fr. Edmund Yainao, SJ, for all the work he does for the Lakota people, he was given a Lakota name. At a small naming ceremony, there were five elderly Lakota women whom he lovingly calls “Unci” (Grandmother) — Gloria Carson, Mary Tognotti, Veronica Valandra, Germaine Little Bear, and Beverly Running Bear.  Also present were Fr. Ed Witt, SJ, pastor of St. Isaac Jogues Parish, and Deacon Bill White, Pine Ridge. The ceremony was held at the Mother Butler Center. The Lakota name that Fr. Edmund was given is: “Wacekiyawicasa Lakol Ohan waunsila un.” Translated it means: “The Father who lives among Lakota with humility and compassion.” He was given a handmade star quilt to honor him, followed by a small reception.
