Flooding continued . . .

Recent precipitation followed by warm weather created flooding in western South Dakota. On the cover, St. Bede Church was unharmed by the rising waters that swirled through Wakpala. (Top right) Water flows through “Old Wakpala” past the white building, which is the U.S. Post Office. (Top left) Water surged down Rock Creek and passed under the foot bridge in Bull Head. (Left) Snow piled up like cotton candy against the religious education building in McLaughlin. According to Father Tony Grossenburg, people were evacuated from their homes in several low-lying areas on the Standing Rock Reservation. Travel was hampered by washed out roads and bridges. In addition, ranchers —unable to get to their pastures — lost several calves and farming efforts were stifled by saturated fields.
He added, “Many people in Corson County have remarked this winter was worse than the blizzards of 1997.”
