Brother
Simon's Legacy
When Brother C.M.
Simon SJ, died in July, he left behind
two lasting memorials. First, he helped
organize the Red Cloud Indian Art Show,
which has been held annually since 1969.
Second, he oversaw the purchase of art
for a permanent collection at the Heritage
Center on the Holy Rosary campus of Red
Cloud Indian School, Pine Ridge. (Above)
This summer, the winner of the award for
a traditional Sioux piece was Don Montileaux.
The drawing depicts a horse and rider on
a ledger page. Coincidently, Brother Simon
worked in the business office at Holy Rosary
before a love of Lakota art took precedence
over the ledgers he worked on. The Heritage
Center is open all year from 9 a.m. to
6 p.m., Monday-Friday, and from 10 a.m.
to 5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday. Brother Claire
M. Simon SJ, died July 14, at the age of
69. He was a Jesuit brother for 47 years – serving
the Lakota people on the Pine Ridge Reservation
for 42 of those years. (Courtesy photo) |

Pope
encourages a cessation
of hostilities in Mideast
By John Thavis
VATICAN CITY (CNS) — As fighting in Lebanon entered
its fifth week, Pope Benedict XVI again urged all sides
to lay down their weapons and end the “tragic conflict.”
The pope quoted Pope Paul VI’s famous invocation at
the United Nations in 1965: “No longer one against the other, no longer,
never again! ... If you wish to be brothers, let the arms fall from your hands.” Click
