The Chrism Mass takes its name
from Jesus Christ, the Anointed One of the Father. As the Anointed
One, Jesus was chosen to fulfill the Father’s plan of salvation.
He did this by taking unto himself the very weakness he was to
overcome in his dying. Each time we are anointed, we become sharers
in the anointing of Jesus Christ.
- Holy Chrism is used to signify the outpouring
of the Holy Spirit on persons and the consecration of sacred
objects for the Lord’s service. Mixed with fragrant
perfume, the holy chrism is consecrated to anoint the newly
baptized, those receiving confirmation, the hands of the
priests and the head of the bishop, and the altar and walls
of the church.
- Oil of the
Sick is blessed for the anointing
of all who suffer in mind and body. By the holy anointing,
the sick gain strength in their suffering, are released from
fear, and receive the consolation of faith.
- Oil of the
Catechumens is used for the
anointing of the infants, children, and adults who are preparing
for baptism. By this anointing, they receive strength to
renounce sin and resist the glamour of evil and so approach
the waters of baptism.
