About the Director :
Fr. John Hatcher, SJ is the director of the Inculturation Project Office. He has a graduate degree in the Theology of Mission from Regis College in Toronto. His thesis was Paul VI's 'Evangelization in the Modern World' and the Mission to the Sioux Indians of South Dakota: Theory and Praxis. He helped design and was the director of the Permanent Diaconate Program for twenty-three years and he designed and was the director of the lay ministry program from 1991-1999. He is co-author of the three-volume text, Builders of the New Earth: a formation program for deacons and lay ministers.
He helped build and served as director of the Sioux Spiritual Center for twenty years. In his capacity as director of the Center, he organized a successful ten-day formation program for missionary personnel. Over one hundred and fifty people have attended the Basic Directions in Native Ministry Institute. It is the only formation program for those who want to work with Native American people in the United States.
He is the Chair of the Pastoral Reflection Team on Inculturation for the Bishops' Ad Hoc Committee for Native American Catholics. He has held this position for five years.
In addition, Father Hatcher serves as the Superior of the Kino Jesuit Community and of Saint Francis Mission on the Rosebud Reservation.
