OVERVIEW

Leadership:
Catholic Native leadership is almost non-existent. There are two avenues we can use to remedy this situation. The first is to make available on the national level a successful program for the development of lay ministers and deacons, which is in place in the Diocese of Rapid City. The second is to begin development of an indigenous formation program for Native priests. This latter proposal would require the involvement of Church officials. The Bishop of Rapid City is willing to secure broader support for it among his brother bishops.

Inculturation:
The Church calls people of every culture to express their cultural heritage in the liturgy and make their necessary contribution to theology and the life of the Church. We propose to make workshops available throughout the United Sates to encourage Native people to begin the inculturation discussion in their areas. It is our intent to provide a proven model of discussion along with specialists in theology, liturgy, and anthropology to assist in the dialogue.
